Montreal’s history-making events

We will be commemorating two anniversaries on May 17, 2022: Pointe-à-30th Callière’s and Montreal’s 380th! The Museum asked Mario Robert, a historian, archivist, and the head of the Société Historique de Montréal, to provide a list of 30 significant moments in the history of the city. These are the top ten. A wonderful way to greet Montreal on its birthday!

The community of Hochelaga

On October 3, 1535, the navigator Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) and his crew were greeted in the village of Hochelaga by the Iroquoians of St. Lawrence, sedentary agricultural peasants who had been living in the Montreal area for more than two centuries. Soon after, they abandoned the Saint-Laurent Valley and destroyed Hochelaga at the same time.

The establishment of Montreal

To establish a missionary colony there, Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve (1612–1676), Jeanne Mance (1606–1673), and about forty other persons arrived on the cleared spot in 1611. Fort Ville-building Marie’s gets underway. Founded on May 17, 1642, in Montreal.

Montreal’s Great Peace

On August 4, 1701, more than 1,300 representatives from 39 indigenous nations in northeastern America and New France signed the Great Peace of Montreal, ending decades of hostilities. The principal artisans were the Wendat chief Kondiaronk (c. 1649–1701) and the governor Louis-Hector de Callière (1648–1703).

The abdication of New France

On September 8, 1760, Governor Pierre de Rigaud de Cavagnial, marquis de Vaudreuil (1698-1778), who was surrounded by British soldiers, signed the capitulation of New France.

Canadians have arrived!

On December 4, 1909, the Canadian Hockey Club was established. To compete with the Montreal Wanderers, it depends on players who speak French. On January 5, 1910, the team played its inaugural game at the Jubilee Arena on rue Sainte-Catherine Est.
